Celebrating International Women’s Day
https://www.internationalwomensday.com/
International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 8th. This got me thinking more about the history and role of women in photography. Through some quick online research, Wikipedia states that Sarah Anne Bright (1793 - 1866) produced what is possibly the earliest surviving photographic evidence taken by a woman. Constance Fox Talbot (1811- 1880) experimented with the process of photography and was possibly the first woman to take a photograph.
I was also curious about women war photographers. Those who put their lives in danger while capturing the atrocities of war. I found the names of some influential female war photographers, and I look forward to learning more about them.
Some I found mentioned are:
Margaret Bourke-White (1907 - 1971)
Gerda Taro (1910 - 1937)
Lee Miller (1907 - 1977)
Dickey Chapelle (1919 - 1965)
Christine Spengler (1945 - )
A resource that I am adding to my want to read list is “Women War Photographers: From Lee Miller to Anja Niedringhaus (Kunstpalast and Prestel, 2019."
I welcome feedbak and suggestions for topics of future blog posts. Thank you for reading and your support!
